CAMERA & LIGHTING TRAINING - AVAILABLE IN PERSON & ONLINE

See my specific camera training website here: https://www.ukcameratraining.com/

Alongside my shooting work I offer bespoke camera and lighting tuition. I'm highly experienced on pretty much all video cameras and shooting situations, and have given training and led workshops pretty much as long as I've been shooting.

My training is 100% bespoke, and tailored to what you want to learn. Often I train with people who have a camera which they feel they're not using to its full potential and want to improve their general shooting skills and knowledge. These could be self-shooters, independent filmmakers, or shooters working in-house at a production company. Sometimes I work with APs or researchers who want to learn to shoot better so they can apply for more shooting-type roles in TV. Or sometimes it's just amateurs who want to up their skills so they can shoot more useable footage.

Amongst many others, I've taught APs and researchers how to shoot for primetime programmes Escape to the Country and Grand Designs. I've led workshops for the BBC, National Youth Film Academy and FACT Liverpool, and spent a month teaching factual filmmaking in Kabul, Afghanistan.

I’ve recently started to offer virtual training sessions via Zoom for people who already have the gear and don’t need me to be physically present. If you think this is something that could be of benefit, do get in touch.

The cameras that are most in demand at the moment in TV, documentary and branded content are still the more recent Sonys (FX3, FX6 & FX9). Alongside those, the Sony FS7, C300 and Blackmagic Cinema cameras are all still widely used by self-shooters.

More often than not I train people on either their own equipment, or equipment they have access to already (through a production company, for instance). I own and work most widely with the Sony FX6, and can incorporate my camera into the training day rate. Renting equipment is always an option, and is often how I work with production companies and corporates, but the cost of rental may prove prohibitive for some. Training is normally done at your home or office - I don’t have my own studio to run courses from - although we can look into affordable spaces should you be unable to host.

If you'd like to discuss training possibilities - on cameras large or small - please get in touch. I do largely one-to-one training but can work with small groups if everyone is roughly at the same level. Rates are flexible but fair, but I’d encourage you to get in touch regardless of your circumstances.

I’m based between Manchester and London these days but regularly travel further afield, and have run training in Liverpool, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire, Norwich and the Midlands.

TESTIMONIALS

I cannot recommend Jamie’s training enough. He’s a really knowledgeable DoP but also a great teacher and was able to communicate in a really clear way how I could improve my shooting and lighting. His approach was tailored to my needs, clear, methodical and not at all patronising, and by the end of the day’s training I felt 10X more confident in my shooting abilities, particularly around how to set up and light an interview. The results have been immediate in my work, so definitely money well spent.

I did the online camera training with Jamie for my Sony FX3. Even before our session, Jamie asked to see my work and took the time to understand exactly what I wanted to get out of the training so he could tailor it specifically to my needs. He also made sure I was fully set up to share my camera settings beforehand, which made the online session run smoothly and efficiently. I’ve been shooting and editing with the FX3 for over a year, but I still couldn’t quite achieve the quality and look I was aiming for. During the session, Jamie didn’t just tell me what settings to change, he explained why we were changing them. That made a huge difference. I realised I had been overcomplicating a lot of what the camera can do. By the end of the training, we had my camera configured to get the best possible results, and I now feel far more confident going into jobs because I understand exactly why I’m using the settings I am. I’m really pleased with the results, and I’d highly recommend the virtual training. It worked perfectly for me and took my footage from good-looking to amazing.

After nearly a decade away from self-shooting, I had lost my confidence and stopped considering it something I could do. Recently, I decided it was time to reconnect with that part of my work - I missed the freedom of self-shooting and I wanted to learn how to use the Sony FX6. I booked a one-on-one tutorial with Jamie and I can honestly say it was transformative. In just one day, he helped me feel not only confident with the FX6, but adapting to other cameras too - and I was excited to start shooting again! Jamie’s approach was clear, thoughtful, and encouraging—he understood exactly where I was coming from and tailored the session to get me up and running quickly. I can’t recommend Jamie highly enough. Whether you’re returning to self-shooting or picking it up for the first time, he’s exactly the person you want guiding you through it.

I booked a two day training session with Jamie after taking the leap to the Sony FX6 from shooting films on a DSLR. I was feeling out of my depth, wading through hours of YouTube just to get to grips with basic functions. I can honestly say that my days with Jamie were completely transformative. He is a fantastic teacher, clearly an expert in his subject but also measured, respectful, good at listening to specific concerns and at tailoring advice so as to be relevant to how you want to shoot. I was so excited to start filming straight away after our training and I’m a total Sony convert! Really can’t recommend Jamie highly enough.
